Welcome to visitors of all ages who find themselves visiting the Isles of Shoals for a day or a lifetime.
The Rutledge Marine Laboratory is open during the summer, from Memorial Day until mid-September. The hours of the lab are Sunday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We are also open on Saturdays and some evenings but our hours vary. If you’re in the area, stop by as we’re sure you’ll find something interesting.
The Rutledge Marine Lab can be reached only by boat. That’s because it’s on Star Island, one of the islands that makes up the Isles of Shoals located approximately 10 nautical miles from Portsmouth, NH. Most visitors ride the Thomas Laighton out to Star Island for a day visit or book a week’s stay with the Star Island Corporation. For a quicker ride you can take the Uncle Oscar out of Rye Harbor and stay for one or more days on a personal retreat if space permits.
Of course, we are happy to host special excursions, talks, or educational visits. So please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to book a special visit!
The laboratory staff also offer a variety of walks and activities that include: geology walks, bird walks, billy-goat (on the rocks) walks, low-tide walks, snorkeling gear, fishing gear, botany walks, discussions on sustainability and invited guest speakers on birds and other subjects. The times and days for the walks change weekly depending on conference needs so stop in and check our chalk board if you’d like to join us.
